Rome is other wise know as the "Eternal City" because of its contrast, life, and great beauty. Rome goes back to the very early days of civilization. The romans believe the city was founded in year 753 BC, although modern histories believed it was founded in year 625 BC. At first the city was known to be ruled by a king. 7 kings passed by until finally the Romans decided to run it themselfs and form a senate. Rome knew four classes of people:
Lowest were the slaves
next were the plebeians who were free people but had next to no power
second highest were known as the equestrians (sometimes known as knights)
finally the highest class was the nobles. The real power of rome lays with them.
Rome is the largest city, and is the Capital of Italy. Its population is roughly 2 1/2 million people. Rome is known for its intriguing shopping centers. Romes first-ever shopping mall was built by the Emperor "Trajan" . It consisted of several levels and more than 150 outlets that sold everything ranging from food and spices to clothes. Some of the major attractions in Rome are:
The Colosseum - Colosseo is the largest monument in existence from Imperial Rome. It is a huge amphitheater that housed the fierce gladiator and wild animal fights
The Roman Forum - Foro Romano is one of the city's most important archaeological sites. It was the focal point of Republican Rome and has monuments from 900 years of history.
Romes most famous citizen was no doubt Julius Caesar. He was a Roman politician and general who conquered the vast territory of the Gauls to the north of his province in France with no orders to do so. Year 49 BC Julius Caesar crossed the river of Rubicon and conqured Rome itself which he then ruled as a dictator. He was soon killed within the senate of Rome. After Julius passed many other Emperors ruled over Rome, such as: Augustus, Caudius, Nero, Titus, Trajan, and Hadrian. In the end the Roman empire was overrun by millions of barbarians from the north and east of Europe. The Roman armies were designed to fight and win against any army that could have been thrown at them, but were not designed to defeat entire folks and people flooding towards them. Rome was conqured Ad 476 by Visigoth Odoacer and his men.
