Not only Pompeii but the sister city of Herculaneum was also destroyed during a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. The eruption was a total of two days and covered the entire city in 4-6 metres of ash. The city was actually lost for over 1500 years when it was accidentally discovered in 1599. Interesting facts: The name "Pompeii" is actually Latin for the number five, pompe, that proposes the community of Pompeii was consisted of five hamlets or, maybe that it was settled by a family group. During World War II, the American military set up base in Pompeii but while they were there, the volcano erupted; destroying army tents, military equipment and 88 air crafts. Mount Vesuvius is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because it killed a population of 3 million people. The ashes of Mt Vesuvius has travelled 1200 kms away from the actual volcano. Pompeii is an archaeological site that is the longest to be continually excavated in the world,"
